Socialism
Socialism is to be approached as both a critique of capitalism and a potential framework for aligning economic practices with Christian ethics.
1. A Moral and Theological Critique of Capitalism
• Socialism is a corrective to the systemic injustices inherent in capitalism, such as exploitation, inequality, and greed.
• Socialism is aligned with biblical values like justice, equity, and care for the poor, often pointing to the early Christian community in Acts
2:44-45 as an example of communal sharing and mutual support.
• Socialism’s emphasis on human dignity and the common good, values are central to Christian theology.
2. Socialism and the Kingdom of God
• Socialism’s vision of economic and social equality resonates with the eschatological vision of the Kingdom of God, where justice and peace
prevail.
• While not equating socialism with the Kingdom, we view it as a system that better reflects God’s intentions for humanity than capitalism.
3. Rejection of Atheistic Materialism
• Christians are to be critical of forms of socialism that reject religious or spiritual values, particularly Marxist or atheistic materialism. Christian
socialism must be rooted in faith and the recognition of God’s sovereignty.
• Christians are to be warned against adopting any political ideology uncritically, advocating instead for a theology-infused approach to socialism.
4. Advocacy for Economic Justice
• Elements of socialism that promote economic justice, such as wealth redistribution, public welfare programs, and protections for workers, are to
be promoted
• Extremes of socialism that might lead to authoritarianism or the suppression of individual freedoms are to be critiqued, stressing the need for b
balance and accountability.
5. Christian Socialism as a Witness
• Christians are to embrace socialism not as an ideology but as a form of discipleship and witness to God’s justice. We call for economic practices
that prioritize community well-being, care for the vulnerable, and environmental stewardship.
